Year old bug... the broken hatchet/animation issue

WebI recently crafted the Hoar-Frost Hatchet and I am unsure of its purpose. As an axe it gathers wood worse than a basic stone axe and rarely gives ice shards. It also doesn't seem to be a good weapon and doesn't harvests ice shards from bodies. So am I missing it's function or does it just for cutting trees?
